A hat tip to Ron at Lean Six Sigma Academy for the following video of Gary Vaynerchuk delivering a keynote address at the Web 2.0 conference in New York last month. Gary had taken over a family business, grew it to $50 million, then jumped out when he was "one percent unhappy." He then started a wine review website, and after you see his style you’ll know it isn’t exactly the typical wine review site.
Although his keynote is addressed to an audience of internet junkies, he drives home some great messages:
- Life is too short to be unhappy so do what you love
- If you do what you love you’ll find a way to make a living out of it, even if it’s "selling Smurfs"
- Build the "brand of you"
- It takes work, but what else are you "doing between 7pm and 2am?"
Yes, get home from the "real" job, kiss the dog, and get to work building happiness. As he puts it, "just stop watching Lost!" No argument there.

Amen – this concept of building the “Brand of You” is solid advice, it represents the only realistic way to get “Career Insurance” in today’s uncertain times. Career Insurance is defined as “the ability to positively impact the probability that you will maintain and extend your “employability” within your Industry. It cements your status within your chosen profession… and allows you to thrive and flourish despite the inevitable separation from your current employer”. Career Insurance also gives you more direct control over the following issues: Relocation, Level of Responsibility, reporting structure, and of course your earning potential
Make no mistake …we are all potentially vulnerable as employment implications loom in everything from Global Warming, to the Global Cooling of economic markets, from right sizing to downsizing, and from Outsourcing, to Global Sourcing. To wit, there is now arapidly evolving view that your “Social Capital” in this quickly changing, increasingly high tech world is in fact now …your most vital currency.
The Concept that your “brand” is the key to building and sustaining your personal and professional network. Supports the notion that your Network …if healthy will play a major role in your economic, social, spiritual, and emotional health. Thus “Your Network is your Net Worth”. and will emerge as the ultimate proof that in a battle of Power vs Influence – Influence always, always wins.
